About Lappland
I set off from the ferry terminal in Umea with the satnav cheerfully insisting I had another two hours to go, only to realise halfway that I had somehow typed "Bjoerkholm" instead of Bjurholm. The detour took me down a narrow gravel track lined with pine trees before I finally spotted the red wooden house tucked behind a small cluster of birch. My cheeks were still warm from the mix-up when I pulled into the drive and the first thing I noticed was the quiet. Not just silence, but that deep, soft kind of quiet you only get when you're properly away from everything.

The owners had left a handwritten note on the kitchen table telling me the key was under the flowerpot and that the sauna was already heated if I fancied it. I did not. Instead I dragged one of the striped deckchairs onto the small patch of grass that catches the afternoon sun and simply sat there with a book I had been meaning to finish for months. The pages stayed open on my lap more often than they turned.

Over the next few days the pattern repeated itself without much effort on my part. Mornings began with coffee on the veranda while the mist lifted off the nearby lake. I wandered down the short path to the water's edge once or twice, mostly to watch the dragonflies, and on one occasion I even managed a very slow swim before retreating to the warmth of a towel. Afternoons were spent reading in the same chair, occasionally glancing up when a bird landed on the fence. The nearest shop was a short drive away in the village, so most of my meals came from whatever simple things I had picked up there: fresh bread, cheese, and the kind of jam that tastes like actual berries rather than sugar.

I had planned to explore the surrounding forest trails and maybe rent a canoe, but the sun kept convincing me otherwise. Each time I thought about putting on proper walking shoes, the light would shift across the wooden deck and I would decide the book could wait one more chapter. It felt surprisingly easy to let the days stretch out like this. The only real decision was whether to move the chair a few feet to follow the shade or stay put and accept the freckles.

By the third evening I caught myself smiling at how little I had actually done. No grand adventures, no packed itinerary, just the gentle rhythm of sunlight, the creak of the deckchair, and the occasional dip in the lake when the heat became too much. The mishap on the way here already felt like part of the story, a reminder that sometimes getting slightly lost is the quickest way to find exactly where you need to be.
