About Lappland
The cabin itself felt instantly welcoming, with its simple wooden porch and the faint smell of wood smoke still lingering from whoever had last lit the stove. We had planned to unpack straight away and head into town for supplies, but a handwritten note on the kitchen table mentioned a short path behind the shed that led to a small jetty. Curiosity won, and we followed it instead, boots already muddy from the earlier detour. The path twisted between birches and low blueberry bushes, and before we knew it we had completely lost sight of the cabin. Rather than panic we decided to keep walking, figuring the jetty had to be close. What we found was not the jetty at all but a tiny clearing where someone had left an old rowing boat turned upside down, its hull now a perfect bench for watching the water. A pair of ducks drifted past without a care in the world, and the silence was so complete I could hear my own breathing. We sat there for ages, passing a bar of chocolate between us and laughing about how a wrong turn at the airport had somehow led to this accidental discovery. From that spot we could just make out the edge of another narrow track heading further into the trees, and naturally we had to follow it. Further along the track opened onto a quiet stretch of shore where the water was so clear we could see the bottom stones shifting with the current. A weathered sign half-hidden in the grass pointed to a “viewpoint” that turned out to be nothing more than a flat rock with enough room for two people and a thermos. We stayed until the midges started to notice us, then wandered back the way we had come, still unsure exactly where we were but oddly content with that fact. The cabin eventually appeared through the trees like an old friend, and we realised we had spent the entire afternoon without ever reaching the jetty we had set out to find. That evening, while the kettle boiled, I caught myself thinking how often we chase the perfect itinerary only to miss the unplanned bits that stay with you longest. Getting properly lost on our first afternoon had given us a gentle reminder that sometimes the best parts of a holiday happen when the map stays in the glovebox. |
