About Jamtland
We drove up from the south in the kind of slow, steady rain that makes every mile feel twice as long, the kind that turns windscreen wipers into a metronome you start counting without meaning to. By the time we reached Taenndalen the light had already gone flat and grey, and the satnav cheerfully announced we had arrived when we were still staring at a stretch of empty road and a sign half buried in slush. That was the small mishap: we had followed the wrong turning at the last junction and ended up circling a quiet cluster of red cabins twice before realising our actual place was tucked just behind the treeline. My partner laughed first; I pretended I had known all along and then promptly reversed into a snowdrift that refused to let the back wheels go until we both got out and pushed like a pair of optimistic penguins.

Once the car was finally pointing the right way, the cabin itself looked exactly like the sort of place you promise yourself you will return to every winter and then somehow never do. The wooden steps were already swept clear, and a neat stack of logs sat under the little overhang by the door, the top ones dusted with fresh snow like someone had sugared a cake. Inside, the warmth hit us straight away, the kind that smells faintly of pine and last night's fire. We kicked off our boots on the tiled entryway and padded straight through to the big living space where the sofa faced a wall of glass that framed the forest like a moving postcard. Outside the snow was still falling, soft and unhurried, and the only sound was the occasional creak of settling timber and the low hum of the fridge we had forgotten to switch on.

We did not unpack straight away. Instead we stood by the window with mugs of instant coffee we had brought from home, watching a red squirrel dart along the railing of the deck as if it owned the place. The kitchen was small but perfectly judged, everything within two steps, and the bedroom upstairs already had the duvet turned down and extra blankets folded at the foot of the bed. It felt less like arriving somewhere new and more like remembering a place you had only visited in your head. Later, when the light faded completely, we lit the wood burner and sat listening to the soft tick of the stove and the wind brushing the roof. The tiny wrong turn on the way in already felt like part of the story rather than a mistake, the sort of small chaos that makes the calm afterwards feel properly earned.
