About Jamtland
I had barely turned off the main road towards Storhogna when the sat-nav decided it was time for an early lunch and sent me down a track that promptly turned into someone's driveway. By the time I had reversed out past a rather unimpressed sheep, my partner was laughing so hard she nearly dropped the bag of cinnamon buns we had bought in Vemdalen. We arrived at the cabin still chuckling, the late-afternoon sun already low over the spruce trees and the wooden deck warm underfoot.

The first thing that struck me was how quiet it was once the car engine stopped. No traffic, no voices, just the faint creak of timber and the smell of pine resin drifting on the breeze. The cabin itself sat low among the trees, its red paint bright against the green, and the big windows reflected the sky like still water. Inside, everything felt ready for doing nothing in particular. A couple of well-worn armchairs faced the window, a stack of paperbacks waited on the low table, and the kettle looked as though it had boiled for many previous guests who had also come here to slow down.

We unpacked only what we needed for the evening and left the rest in the car. Supper was simple: bread, cheese, and those slightly squashed buns eaten on the deck while the light faded. Afterwards we sat with mugs of tea until the midges gave up and the first stars appeared. I had planned to walk the short track to the nearby lake the next morning, but when the sun came out again I found myself still in the same chair at midday, book open on my lap and the pages barely turned.

Over the next couple of days we wandered a little, never far. There is a gentle path that follows the edge of the forest behind the cabins, and we ambled along it most afternoons, stopping whenever a patch of sunlight looked inviting. Once we reached the small clearing with a bench and stayed there for an hour, listening to nothing much except the odd woodpecker and the wind in the tops of the trees. Back at the cabin we read, dozed, and occasionally remembered to make coffee. The lack of urgency felt almost luxurious after months of rushing at home.

On our last full day I caught myself checking the time out of habit, then laughed and put the phone away again. There was nothing that needed doing except perhaps another slow circuit of the path and another chapter of the book that was still only half finished. Sitting on the deck with the sun on my face, I realised how rarely I let a day simply unfold without a plan. The cabin had not forced me to relax; it had simply removed every reason not to. By the time we packed the car to leave, the sat-nav could have sent us anywhere and I doubt I would have minded.
