We set off from Ostersund airport in our little hire car with the satnav confidently promising a straightforward hour and a half to Hunge. Naturally we managed to miss the turning twice, once because I was busy pointing out a passing reindeer and once because the road signs seemed to have a sense of humour all their own. By the time we bumped down the final gravel track my nerves were frayed and my pride slightly dented, yet the sight of the red wooden cabin tucked among the pines made every wrong turn worthwhile.

The owners had left the key under a flowerpot as promised, and the first thing that struck me was how perfectly quiet it felt. No traffic hum, just the soft rustle of wind through the birches and the occasional creak of the porch steps under our bags. Inside, the wood burner was already laid ready, and a handwritten note suggested we might like the little rowing boat down by the jetty if the weather held. We had planned a proper unpack and a cup of tea, but the afternoon light looked too inviting to waste indoors.

Instead of following any map we simply wandered out along the nearest track, telling ourselves we would only go as far as the next bend. That bend revealed another, and before long the trees thinned to reveal a narrow path that clearly was not on any tourist leaflet. A short scramble over a fallen log brought us to a tiny clearing where a weathered wooden jetty stretched into a mirror-still lake. Dragonflies hovered above the reeds and a pair of ducks took off in mild protest at our arrival. We stood there grinning like children who had found a secret base.

Further along the same unplanned route we stumbled across an old timber shed half-hidden by tall grass. Its door hung slightly ajar, revealing neat stacks of split logs and a dusty shelf of jam jars labelled in faded ink. A handwritten sign tacked to the wall offered free kindling in exchange for a promise to close the door again. We helped ourselves to a few pieces, left a scribbled thank-you note, and felt oddly pleased to have been trusted by strangers we would probably never meet.

By the time we turned back the light had softened into that long northern glow that makes everything look gentler. Our accidental detour had taken us past a meadow dotted with tiny wild strawberries, which we picked straight into our palms and ate on the spot, their sweetness sharpened by the evening chill. I realised then that the best part of the trip so far had nothing to do with the cabin itself and everything to do with letting the landscape decide our route.

Back at the porch we lit the fire and sat with mugs of tea watching the sky fade from pink to deep blue. The mishaps of the morning already felt distant, replaced by the quiet satisfaction of having got properly lost and found something better than any planned itinerary. Tomorrow we might follow another nameless track, or we might simply stay put and watch the lake from the window. Either way, the real discovery had already happened on that first unplanned wander through the woods.
