About Jamtland
That set the tone for the whole stay. The cottage itself was tucked between tall pines with a view across the still lake, but it was the people who kept turning up that made the first day unforgettable. The neighbour, Birgitta, appeared within an hour carrying a basket of cloudberries she claimed were "only slightly stolen from the public land." She stayed for tea, told me exactly how her ex-husband had tried and failed to build a sauna on the same spot, and left with strict instructions to knock on her door if the boiler made its usual wheezing noise. Later that afternoon I wandered down to the little jetty to watch the light on the water. An older couple were already there untangling fishing lines. They introduced themselves as Sven and Maj-Lis and immediately asked whether I had come alone or was "hiding someone in the boot." When I admitted it was just me they nodded approvingly and offered a plastic mug of coffee from their thermos. Sven explained that the best perch were biting just before sunset and that I should borrow his rod rather than waste money on the tourist shop in Oviken. Maj-Lis added that the shopkeeper was her cousin and charged double for anyone with an English accent, so I had better stick with them. By evening the light had turned soft and golden, and I found myself sitting on their porch eating smoked fish straight from the smoker while they argued gently about whose turn it was to feed the neighbour's cat. The conversation drifted from the price of petrol to the best way to keep midges out of the bedroom, and every so often one of them would pause to ask me a direct question about British weather or why we drive on the wrong side. I realised halfway through the second cup of coffee that I had stopped thinking about the cottage altogether and was simply enjoying being adopted for an evening. The mishap on the drive in had somehow turned into an open door. Instead of unpacking in silence I had spent the first hours being teased, fed and gently corrected by people who clearly saw any new arrival as fair game for conversation. It felt less like a holiday rental and more like being briefly folded into the quiet rhythm of the place, whether I had planned it or not. |
