We set off from the ferry terminal in good spirits, convinced the last stretch would be the easiest bit, but somewhere near the turn for Genvalla the sat nav decided we were going cross-country through a field. After a polite u-turn and a few choice words from my other half, we finally bumped down the gravel track and caught our first proper glimpse of the little red timber house tucked beside the lake. The sun was already low, throwing long shadows across the water, and the place looked exactly like the photos, only warmer somehow.

Stepping out of the car, the air felt cleaner than anything I had breathed in months. Pine needles crunched underfoot and the faint smell of wood smoke drifted from somewhere nearby. The house itself was modest but perfectly kept, its veranda facing straight out over the still water. A couple of deckchairs waited there like they had been expecting us all along. I fumbled with the key safe for what felt like an age, only to discover I had been twisting it the wrong way, and the door finally swung open to a bright, pine-scented living room with a wood burner already laid ready in the corner.

We dropped our bags and wandered straight outside again, drawn by the quiet. The jetty creaked gently as we walked to the end, and the reflection of the trees on the water was so sharp it looked painted. A pair of ducks drifted past without a care in the world. Back on the veranda we found a basket of logs and a note from the owners wishing us a restful stay, which felt oddly personal after the long drive. We decided the unpacking could wait and instead sat with mugs of tea, watching the light fade and listening to nothing much at all.

It struck me then how rarely we actually stop. The journey had been full of small frustrations, yet the moment we arrived everything slowed down without us even trying. The house felt lived-in rather than showy, with books on the shelves and a well-scrubbed kitchen table that invited you to sit and stay awhile. I found myself wondering why we do not do this more often, just disappear for a few days and let the quiet do the heavy lifting. As the first stars appeared over the lake, I realised the mishap with the sat nav had been worth it after all.
