About Jamtland
We set off from the airport with the sat nav promising an easy drive, yet somehow managed to take the wrong turning twice before finally spotting the wooden sign for Funaesdalen. The small mishap left us laughing at our own navigation skills, but it also meant we arrived later than planned and rather peckish. The cottage sat quietly among the trees, its red paint bright against the snow, and the first thing we did was unpack the bags of food we had picked up at a little supermarket on the way.

Inside, the kitchen felt wonderfully welcoming, with plenty of space on the worktops for all our shopping. We had bought rye bread, local cheese, and some smoked fish that the woman behind the counter had recommended. While my partner made coffee, I tried to get the wood burner going, only to discover that the matches were still in the car. By the time I fetched them the kettle had boiled twice and we were both ready for a proper lunch.

That first afternoon we kept things simple. We sliced the bread thick, piled on the cheese and fish, and ate at the big wooden table while watching snow drift past the window. The flavours were stronger than we expected, and we both agreed the smoked fish was the star of the plate. Later we wandered down to a nearby farm shop that the cottage owner had mentioned, barely a mile away. It turned out to be little more than a shed with a bell on the door, but inside we found jars of cloudberry jam and packets of crispbread that we could not resist buying.

Back at the cottage we decided to attempt a proper Swedish-style dinner. I had grand ideas of making a creamy mushroom sauce to go with some pork chops we had brought, yet the first attempt ended with the sauce splitting and the pork slightly overdone. We ate it anyway, laughing at how the meal looked nothing like the picture on the packet. The taste was still good though, especially once we added a generous spoonful of the cloudberry jam on the side.

The next morning we woke to bright sunlight on the snow and decided breakfast should be an event. We toasted slices of the crispbread, spread them with butter and jam, and made soft-boiled eggs using the little timer we found in a drawer. Sitting there with the radio on low, I caught myself thinking how rarely we slow down enough to enjoy something this ordinary. The simple act of cooking and eating felt like the real point of the trip.

By the second evening we had learned a few lessons. We bought fresh lingonberries from the farm shop and tried making a quick compote to serve with pancakes. This time the sauce stayed together, and we both felt quietly proud as we carried the plates to the table. The pancakes were a little uneven in size, yet they tasted all the better for the effort.

Those first days set the tone for the rest of the stay. Each meal became its own small adventure, whether it was reheating yesterday's stew or experimenting with whatever we found in the fridge. The cottage kitchen, with its big window overlooking the trees, turned into the heart of everything. We talked more, laughed more, and ate better than we had in months, all because we had nowhere else to be except right there, cooking and tasting our way through the quiet Swedish winter.
