We set off from the train station in a bit of a rush, the sort of cheerful panic that happens when you've underestimated how long it takes to drag suitcases across cobbles. The drive up to the cottage near Are took us past lakes that looked almost too still, and by the time we turned onto the gravel track the sun was already high and warm. Our first mistake was thinking the key would be under the mat like every other holiday let we've known. Instead we spent ten minutes circling the porch trying every window until a neighbour wandered over with the actual spare, grinning as if this happened weekly.

Inside, the place felt instantly welcoming, wooden floors catching the light and a little deck that looked straight out onto the trees. We dumped our bags, changed into walking shoes, and decided to make the most of the weather straight away. The forecast had promised mild and bright, so we set off along the path that follows the edge of the water just a short stroll from the house. It felt good to stretch our legs after the journey, and the air carried that clean scent of pine and damp earth that always makes you breathe deeper without thinking about it.

Half an hour in the clouds started to gather, the sort of quick Swedish shift that turns a sunny afternoon into something cooler and greyer without warning. We kept going anyway, following the narrow track that hugs the shoreline, stopping now and then to watch a pair of ducks bob along the reeds. The light changed everything, making the water look darker and the distant hills softer. We laughed about how underprepared we were, no jackets, just optimism and a shared bag of crisps.

By the time we turned back the first spots of rain had started, light enough that we didn't mind getting a bit damp. It gave us an excuse to slow down, to notice the way the path curved between low bushes and how the cottage came into view again like an old friend. Back on the deck we dried off with tea from the kitchen and watched the weather pass over the lake, the sort of quiet moment that makes you realise you've already stopped checking your phone.

That small mix-up with the key and the sudden change in the sky seemed to set the tone for the whole stay. Instead of rushing around we found ourselves content with gentle walks each morning, sometimes along the same stretch of coast when the sun stayed out, sometimes cutting it short when the clouds rolled in again. The cottage itself stayed in the background, a warm place to return to rather than the main event, and that felt exactly right for the kind of holiday where the plan keeps rewriting itself.
