About Halland
We set off from Gothenburg in good spirits, the car loaded with far too many snacks and the sort of optimism that only comes with a week away from work. The satnav led us smoothly through Halland, past rolling fields and the occasional red wooden barn, until we reached the outskirts of Vessigebro. Everything was going rather well until we turned down the final lane and I managed to drive straight into a puddle the size of a small pond. Water sprayed up the windscreen like a badly aimed garden hose, and my partner let out the sort of laugh that suggested she had been waiting for something like this to happen all morning.

By the time we pulled up outside the cottage the sun had come out again, and the little mishap already felt like part of the story. The house sat quietly among trees, its wooden walls glowing in the late light, with a neat lawn stretching down to a gentle slope. We stepped out, shoes slightly damp, and the first thing that struck us was how still everything felt. No traffic noise, just birdsong and the faint rustle of leaves.

Inside, the rooms were simple and welcoming. Pale wood floors, comfortable sofas, and a kitchen that looked ready for proper holiday cooking rather than rushed weekday meals. We unpacked the essentials first, coffee, bread, and the children’s favourite biscuits, then wandered out to explore the garden. A small terrace offered a couple of chairs and a table where we could sit with a cuppa and watch the afternoon drift by. The children immediately claimed the open space for a game of chase, their voices carrying lightly across the grass.

Later we strolled into Vessigebro itself, a short walk down a quiet road lined with wildflowers. The village shop was small but perfectly stocked with local cheese and fresh bread, and we returned with enough for a lazy supper on the terrace. As the light faded we lit a few candles, grilled some sausages, and ate outside until the midges reminded us it was time to move indoors. Nothing dramatic, just the sort of evening that makes you realise how rarely you actually sit still.

That first day set the tone for the rest of the week. We did not rush anywhere or plan much beyond the next meal. Instead we read books on the sofa, took short walks along nearby lanes, and let the children run themselves tired in the garden. Every so often I caught myself checking my phone out of habit, only to put it away again when I remembered there was nothing urgent waiting. It felt oddly freeing to let the days unfold without a list.

By the end of our stay I had stopped worrying about the small things that usually occupy my mind. The cottage had done its job without any fuss, giving us space to slow down and enjoy the ordinary bits of being together.
