About Halland
We had barely made it past the outskirts of Varberg when the sat nav decided to send us down a gravel track that was clearly meant for tractors rather than our little hire car. By the time we realised our mistake and reversed back onto the proper road, we were both laughing so hard that the whole journey felt lighter somehow. That small detour turned out to be the perfect introduction to slowing down.

Once we arrived at the house, we didn't even bother unpacking straight away. The sun was out, the deck was warm, and the view across the quiet fields made it impossible to think about anything except finding a chair and staying there. We spent the first afternoon doing exactly that. I read half a paperback while my partner dozed with a cap over his face, and every so often one of us would wander inside for another cup of coffee before settling back into the same spot.

The next morning we walked into the centre of Varberg, which took us less than twenty minutes along a flat, tree-lined path. We stopped at a small bakery for cardamom buns and sat on a bench outside, watching people cycle past with dogs trotting alongside. Later we wandered down towards the seafront, though we never quite made it onto the sand. Instead we found a grassy spot near the old fortress walls and stayed there until the sun dipped lower.

Back at the house the days blurred together in the nicest way. We ate simple meals outside, read a bit more, and occasionally napped without feeling guilty about it. One afternoon I spent an hour just watching the light move across the wooden fence while a bumblebee worked its way through the clover. It felt oddly satisfying to have no plan at all.

I kept thinking about how rarely we manage this at home, how quickly we fill every spare hour with something that feels useful. Here, the only useful thing seemed to be noticing how good the air smelled after a light rain, or how the birds went quiet around midday. Even the small mishap on the way in felt like part of the same lesson. Sometimes getting slightly lost is what reminds you to stop rushing.
