I set off for Valinge just outside Varberg in mid-October, the sort of damp autumn morning where the sky never quite decides if it is going to rain or simply stay grey. My sat-nav decided to be dramatic about the last turn and sent me down a narrow track lined with dripping pines, which would have been fine if I had not missed the proper entrance and ended up nose-first in a hedge. The car came to a soft, embarrassing stop among wet leaves while a pair of curious sheep watched from the field opposite. By the time I had reversed out, my jacket was speckled with mud and my sense of direction thoroughly humbled.

The cottage itself sat at the end of a gravel drive, a low wooden building with a red-painted gable and a covered porch already scattered with fallen leaves. October had turned the surrounding meadow tawny and the air carried that clean, sharp scent of wet earth and pine needles that only seems to appear once the summer tourists have gone. I stepped inside to find the heating already on, the wooden floors warm underfoot, and a small wood-burner waiting with a neat stack of birch logs. It felt less like arriving at a holiday let and more like walking into someone’s quiet weekend place.

The first afternoon was spent simply getting the measure of the light. The low sun never climbed very high, so the rooms stayed softly lit even at midday, and the big windows framed a view of fields fading into mist. I made coffee, left the door open despite the chill, and listened to the occasional drip from the gutter. Outside, the garden had been left to do its own thing; a few late roses still clung to a trellis by the shed, their petals edged with brown. It was the sort of gentle disorder that felt right for the season, nothing forced or overly tidy.

Later I walked the short lane that leads toward the coast path. The sea was only a couple of miles away, but October had already stripped the path of its summer crowds, leaving just the sound of waves and the odd gull riding the wind. I turned back before the light faded completely, grateful for the porch light that clicked on automatically as I approached. Inside again, the cottage felt even cosier with the curtains drawn and the wood-burner crackling. I sat with a book and caught myself smiling at how little I had actually done and how content that made me.

There is something about arriving in Halland at this time of year that strips away the usual holiday pressure to be constantly busy. The shorter days and cooler air make staying put feel like the sensible choice rather than the lazy one. My hedge mishap on the way in had already set a suitably low bar for adventure, and the cottage seemed happy to keep it there. By evening I was perfectly content with the sound of rain on the roof and the knowledge that tomorrow could be just as unhurried.
