We set off for Unnaryd in Halland thinking the sat nav had it all sorted, but somehow it decided we needed a scenic detour through a forest track that turned out to be someone's driveway. After a sheepish three-point turn and a wave to the bemused chap mowing his lawn, we finally pulled up at the little red cottage tucked behind a row of birch trees. The journey had already set the tone for the whole weekend: slightly off course and all the better for it.

First impressions were instant and warm. The house sat quietly in a clearing with a gravel path leading to the door, and the smell of pine drifted over from the woods behind. We stepped inside to find a simple kitchen with a checked tablecloth and a window that looked straight onto a meadow full of wildflowers. Nothing fancy, just the sort of place where you kick off your shoes and feel at home straight away.

After unpacking we decided to stretch our legs and promptly got ourselves lost again. Instead of finding the marked path to the lake we ended up following a narrow track that wound between mossy boulders and tall ferns. We nearly turned back twice, but each time something new caught our eye: a tiny wooden jetty half-hidden by reeds, then an old boathouse with peeling paint where a pair of ducks were having a loud disagreement. Further along we stumbled across a clearing with a single picnic table and the remains of someone's campfire from the night before. It felt like we'd discovered a secret that even the locals might have forgotten.

By the time we found our way back to the cottage the light was turning golden and the air had that cool, clean edge you only get in the Swedish countryside. We sat on the little veranda with mugs of coffee and watched a hare hop across the grass without a care in the world. I caught myself smiling at how easily we'd slipped into this slower rhythm, even after just a few hours. Getting lost had turned out to be the best part of the day, and I wondered how many other quiet corners were waiting just beyond the next wrong turn.
