About Halland
I had been on the road for hours by the time we finally turned off the main road towards Unnaryd, and my sense of direction had clearly packed up and gone home without me. The satnav kept insisting we had arrived when we were still surrounded by nothing but pine trees and the odd red wooden house, so I decided to trust my own eyes instead. That was the moment the funny little mishap happened. I swung into what looked like a perfectly good driveway, only to discover it was actually the neighbour's garden path, complete with a very surprised cat and a wheelbarrow I nearly took with me. We reversed out amid much laughter and finally found the right turning five minutes later.

The house itself sat quietly among the trees just outside the village, a proper Swedish wooden place with that soft red paint that seems to glow even on an overcast day. After the long drive it felt like stepping into a different pace altogether. The air smelled of pine needles and woodsmoke, and the only sound was a blackbird somewhere in the branches above us. We carried our bags inside and immediately kicked off our shoes the Swedish way, which always feels oddly polite once you get used to it.

Inside, everything was simple and welcoming. The living room had big windows that let the forest light pour in, and the kitchen was already stocked with the sort of practical things you actually need rather than the fancy gadgets you never use. We made a quick cup of tea and stood by the window watching a couple of deer wander across the clearing at the back. It was the sort of moment that makes you realise how rarely you just stand still at home.

Later we wandered down the short track towards the little lake that sits within walking distance. The water was calm enough to reflect the sky perfectly, and we sat on a bench someone had clearly placed there years ago for exactly this purpose. A couple of locals passed by with fishing rods and gave us the friendly nod that says you are welcome here but they are not about to make a fuss about it. On the way back we stopped at the small village shop for milk and bread, and the woman behind the counter asked if we were the new arrivals at the red house. News clearly travels fast in Unnaryd.

By the time we got back it was already starting to feel like our place rather than just a holiday let. The mishap on the driveway had somehow become part of the story already, the sort of small disaster you end up telling friends about because it broke the ice with the journey. Sitting on the little wooden deck with a glass of wine, watching the light fade between the trees, I found myself thinking how easy it is to forget what real quiet feels like until you are properly surrounded by it.
