We set off from the ferry in high spirits, map open on the passenger seat and the Swedish countryside already looking far too neat and tidy for my liking. The satnav had other ideas though, and after confidently directing us down a lane that promptly turned into a field, we found ourselves reversing past a rather unimpressed sheep. By the time we pulled up at Ugglarp Steninge, the sun was low and golden, and the little red wooden house looked exactly like the sort of place you'd sketch on a postcard if you had any talent.

The mishap had left us both a touch rattled, so instead of unpacking straight away we decided to stretch our legs along the quiet track that ran behind the property. What started as a short wander quickly became something else entirely. A narrow footpath we had not noticed earlier wound between low stone walls and patches of wildflowers, leading us away from the main road and into a stretch of woodland that felt far more remote than it had any right to be. We kept expecting to loop back, yet every turn revealed another small surprise: a tiny clearing with a single bench, a stream that trickled over smooth rocks, and eventually a half-hidden viewpoint where the sea appeared between the trees.

By the time we realised we had walked much farther than intended, the light was fading and our stomachs were rumbling. We retraced our steps with considerably less certainty than we had started, laughing at how easily we had got turned around in what was supposed to be a gentle stroll. Back at the house the kitchen felt wonderfully ordinary after our accidental adventure, and we cooked a simple supper while swapping stories about other times we had underestimated a map. It struck me then how often we plan holidays around famous sights, yet the moments that stay with you are the ones that happen when nothing goes quite to plan.

The next morning we tried again, this time with better shoes and a more cautious attitude. The same path rewarded us with different discoveries: a cluster of old boathouses tucked against the shore, their paint peeling in the salt air, and a meadow where the grass grew so tall it brushed our hands as we passed. We met no one else, only the occasional bird and the distant sound of waves. It felt like we had stumbled upon a pocket of Halland that had somehow escaped the usual tourist routes, and the longer we stayed the more we appreciated how little we needed to do.

By the end of the week the initial mishap had become our favourite anecdote, the one we told friends when they asked how the trip had gone. In truth the house itself had been a perfect base, cosy and unpretentious, but it was those unplanned walks that made the stay memorable. Getting properly lost, even for an afternoon, had reminded me that sometimes the best parts of a holiday are the ones you never meant to find.
