About Halland
I had barely turned off the main road towards Ugglarp when the satnav decided I needed a quick detour through a muddy farm track. There I was, reversing into a ditch with the boot full of bags and the rain starting to spit, all because some helpful voice thought a shortcut would save five minutes. By the time I reached the little red cottage with its neat white trim, my shoes were caked and my pride was slightly dented, but the place looked exactly as the photos had promised, a cosy wooden house tucked behind a low hedge with a view straight over the fields.

The first person I met was the owner, a retired dairy farmer called Lars, who came over with a thermos of coffee before I had even unpacked the car. He chuckled at my muddy state and offered me a pair of wellies from his own porch, insisting they would fit “roughly enough.” While I changed, he told me how his grandfather had built the cottage as a summer place and how the village still held a midsummer bonfire every year on the common just up the lane. His stories came out in short bursts between sips of coffee, and I found myself laughing at his dry way of describing the local football team’s annual defeat to the neighbouring parish.

Later that afternoon I wandered down to the small harbour a few minutes’ walk away and got chatting to a woman called Inger who was mending nets on a bench. She asked where I was staying and when I mentioned Ugglarp she nodded as if that explained everything. We ended up sharing a bench and a packet of biscuits while she pointed out which boats belonged to whom and which skipper still owed her a favour from last season’s crayfish party. Her dog, a scruffy spaniel called Pelle, kept trying to steal the treats until Inger scolded him in a mixture of Swedish and what sounded like very old-fashioned English.

Back at the cottage that evening I sat on the little veranda with a mug of tea and thought about how quickly a simple journey mishap had turned into something else entirely. Instead of rushing around ticking off sights, I had spent the day listening to people whose lives were rooted right here. Lars had already invited me to the next bonfire, and Inger had scribbled her phone number on a scrap of paper in case I needed “proper coffee instead of that instant stuff.” It struck me that the real welcome of a place like this does not come from the view or the furniture, but from the small conversations that start when you least expect them.
