We set off from Copenhagen in high spirits, the late summer sun still warm enough to have the windows down, but by the time we crossed into Halland the sky had turned that soft Swedish grey that threatens rain without ever quite delivering. My satnav decided we needed a scenic detour through the woods, so instead of pulling up smartly at the holiday home near Tyloesand we ended up on a narrow track that ended in somebody's driveway. A friendly local in a Volvo reversed out to let us turn, waving as though lost British tourists were a regular Tuesday occurrence. By the time we finally found the right gate, the first proper drops were spotting the windscreen and we tumbled inside laughing at our own poor map reading.

The house itself felt instantly welcoming once we shook off the drizzle. Pale wooden floors, big windows looking straight onto the sandy path that leads to the beach, and that faint smell of pine and sea that seems to cling to every place along this stretch of coast. It was early September, the tail end of the season when the families with small children had already packed up, so the dunes were quiet except for the occasional dog walker. We dropped our bags and wandered straight out, hoods up, shoes filling with cool sand. The water looked almost metallic under the low clouds, and the air carried that clean, sharp edge you only really notice when the crowds have gone.

Back at the house we made coffee and sat on the covered veranda, listening to the rain tap on the roof while we planned nothing more ambitious than a slow walk along the shore later. The seasonal shift made everything feel gentler; the light was softer, the paths less busy, and even the local supermarket in Halmstad had that calm, end-of-summer stock clearance feel with plenty of lingonberry jam left on the shelves. We ended up buying far too much cheese and a packet of fresh prawns from the little harbour stall, then cooked them simply with butter and dill while the rain eased off outside.

It struck me, watching the steam rise from our plates, how much the timing had shaped the whole trip. Had we come in peak July the same house would have felt lively and perhaps a touch hectic, but arriving now let us sink into the slower rhythm without any pressure to do anything impressive. There was a quiet satisfaction in that, the sense that we had caught the coast at exactly the right moment between summer bustle and autumn stillness. We finished the meal with the windows open, the sound of waves carrying in on the breeze, and for once neither of us reached for a phone to check what we might be missing.
