We set off from the ferry port with the sat nav confidently announcing a quick hop to Oskarstroem, only to discover that "quick" in Swedish countryside terms meant an extra half hour of winding lanes and one very surprised sheep. By the time we pulled up outside the little wooden house, the sun was already high and the mishap felt like the perfect excuse to stop rushing. The garden sloped gently toward a low hedge, and beyond it the fields stretched out in that soft, pale green you only seem to get in Halland. We left the bags by the door and simply stood there for a minute, listening to nothing much at all.

Inside, the place felt instantly lived-in rather than show-home tidy. A couple of well-thumbed books sat on the windowsill, and the kitchen table already had space for two mugs and a map we never quite unfolded. We made coffee, carried the chairs outside, and that was pretty much the plan for the rest of the day. The sun stayed put, so we did too, moving only when the shade crept across our legs. A blackbird hopped along the fence as if it owned the place, and we watched it with the mild fascination of people who had nowhere else to be.

Later we wandered down the quiet lane toward the village, not because we needed anything, just to see where it went. We found a small shop that sold fresh bread and postcards no one back home would recognise, and we bought both. On the way back we stopped at the edge of a meadow and sat on the grass for longer than planned, watching the light change on the wooden houses opposite. The air smelled faintly of cut grass and warm pine, and every time I thought about checking my phone I found a better reason not to.

By evening the only thing we'd really achieved was finishing the first chapters of those windowsill books and deciding the best view was from the bench beside the shed. We lit the little outdoor lantern, poured something cold, and listened to the crickets start up. It struck me, not for the first time, how rarely I let a day unfold without a list. Here the list had shrunk to "stay in the sun" and "maybe walk a bit more tomorrow," and that felt like enough. The funny detour on the way in had done its job; it had reminded us that getting slightly lost is sometimes the quickest route to doing very little at all.
