About Halland
Lars's wife, Inger, appeared moments later with a thermos of coffee and the sort of questions that felt more like an interview than small talk. Where was I from, did I like proper cinnamon buns or the shop kind, and had I noticed the fox that kept stealing socks from her line. By the time we reached the little red cottage that was my home for the week, I had already promised to return the rope and been invited for fika the next morning. The cottage itself sat at the edge of a quiet lane, surrounded by tall pines and a strip of meadow that sloped down towards a small lake. Inside it smelled faintly of woodsmoke and clean linen. I dropped my bags, opened the windows, and was immediately distracted by the sound of voices outside. An elderly couple were walking past with a wheelbarrow full of kindling, and when they saw me they stopped to ask whether the previous guests had left the bird feeder full. I admitted I had not checked. They tutted kindly and said they would pop round later with some seed, as though it were the most natural thing in the world. That evening I wandered down to the jetty to watch the light fade over the water. A teenager on a bicycle stopped beside me, offered a cigarette even though I do not smoke, then laughed when I declined and asked instead whether I had tried the local smoked mackerel. When I said I had not, he gave me directions to a small smokehouse just beyond the next bend and told me to mention his name, Anton, or they would charge me tourist prices. I thanked him and watched him pedal away into the dusk, wondering how many other people in this corner of Halland already knew I was here. The following morning I kept my promise and joined Lars and Inger on their veranda. Inger produced a plate of buns still warm from the oven and Lars poured coffee so strong it could have powered a small boat. They asked about my journey, chuckled at the mud story, and then spent twenty minutes debating whether the new footpath around the lake would spoil the fishing or improve it. I mostly listened, nodding when it seemed appropriate, and felt oddly content to be included in a conversation that had clearly been running for years before I arrived. By the time I walked back to the cottage the sun was already high and the lake had turned a soft silver. I realised I had not yet unpacked properly, had not checked the wifi, and did not particularly mind. The mishap on the track had done more than delay me; it had dropped me straight into the middle of other people's lives, and I found myself hoping the rest of the week would unfold at the same unhurried pace. |
