We set off from Gothenburg early, convinced the drive down to Onsala would be a doddle, yet somehow managed to miss the turning for the little road that leads to the house. My partner laughed so hard she nearly spilled her coffee, and we ended up reversing in a lay-by while a tractor trundled past. By the time we finally pulled up in front of the place, both of us were ready for a proper sit-down and a cup of tea.

The house itself looked even better than the pictures. A neat wooden facade with a generous veranda facing the trees, it felt instantly welcoming after hours on the road. We stepped inside to find a bright open-plan living area with big windows that let the afternoon light pour across the floor. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed for a simple lunch, so we unpacked our bits and pieces and made sandwiches while the kettle boiled.

Stepping out onto the terrace again, we could hear birds in the nearby pines and the faint rustle of leaves. The garden sloped gently toward a small clearing where a couple of deckchairs had already been left out, almost as if someone knew we would want to flop straight into them. I sat down with my sandwich and realised how tightly I had been gripping the steering wheel all morning; my shoulders finally dropped.

Later we wandered the short path that runs behind the property and leads toward the edge of the woods. It felt good to stretch our legs without any grand plan. The air smelled clean, a mix of pine and damp earth, and the light had that soft northern quality that makes everything look slightly golden. We passed a neighbour walking a dog and exchanged the usual polite nods that seem to work everywhere in Halland.

Back at the house we unpacked properly, claiming bedrooms and hanging up a few clothes. The bathroom was simple but spotless, and the towels were already laid out. I caught myself smiling at how little it took to feel settled. After the journey chaos, this quiet corner of Onsala felt like exactly the right amount of nothing to do.

As the evening light faded we lit a few candles on the veranda and listened to the occasional car on the distant road. It struck me that the best part of arriving somewhere new is often the first hour when everything still feels possible. We had no big agenda, just a fridge full of basics, a stack of board games on the shelf, and the promise of a slow morning ahead.
