We set off from Gothenburg in the early evening, the car packed with jumpers and a thermos of coffee, expecting the usual straightforward drive down to Langaryd. It was late October, the kind of mild autumn that tricks you into leaving the coat in the boot until you really need it. Halfway along the smaller roads the sat nav decided our turning was a suggestion rather than an instruction, and we found ourselves on a gravel track bordered by dark pine. By the time we corrected ourselves the light had already started to fade, and the first drops of a light rain began to spot the windscreen.

When we finally pulled up at the red wooden house the rain had settled into a steady drizzle that made everything look softer and slightly blurred. The garden, still dotted with a few late roses, looked like it had given up trying to hold on to summer. Inside, the wood burner was already laid ready, and the faint smell of previous fires lingered in the air. We dropped our bags, flicked on a couple of lamps, and stood for a moment just listening to the rain against the windows. It felt oddly comforting, the sort of weather that makes you grateful for four walls and a kettle.

The next morning the rain had eased but the sky stayed low and grey, turning the fields around Langaryd into muted shades of brown and green. We walked the short path down to the little lake nearby, boots sinking slightly into the damp grass. The water was calm, reflecting the overcast sky, and a few ducks drifted along without any urgency. Back at the house we lit the fire properly and spent the afternoon with books and the occasional glance outside, watching the occasional gust of wind send a handful of leaves skittering across the lawn.

By evening the temperature had dropped just enough to make the warmth inside feel deliberate rather than accidental. We cooked a simple meal using what we had brought, the windows steaming up as the rain returned. It struck me, while stirring a pot on the stove, how much the season had quietly taken charge of the whole trip. Normally I would have been planning long walks or looking for the nearest cafe, yet here the weather had made staying put feel like the obvious choice. There was no sense of missing out, only a gentle reminder that sometimes the point of getting away is simply to slow down and notice what the time of year is already offering.
