We set off from Gothenburg with the usual mix of excitement and mild panic about whether we'd packed enough snacks. The drive down to Knaered took just over an hour, and everything was going rather smoothly until I decided to follow the satnav's suggestion of a "shortcut" through what turned out to be someone's gravel driveway. After a quick reverse and an apology wave to a slightly confused dog, we were back on track and pulling up outside the little red cottage that would be home for the week.

The first thing that struck me was how quiet it felt. Just the sound of birds and the faint rustle of leaves, with not a single car in sight. The cottage sat at the end of a short track surrounded by trees, its white-framed windows catching the afternoon sun. Our two children tumbled out of the car before I'd even switched off the engine, already claiming which bedroom was theirs based on which one had the better view of the garden.

Inside, everything felt simple and welcoming. The kitchen had that proper cottage feel, with enough space to spread out breakfast things without anyone bumping elbows. We found a note from the owners suggesting a nearby lake for swimming, and after unpacking the basics we decided to stretch our legs with a short walk. The path led us through a small wooded area and out to a stretch of water that looked perfect for a quick dip, though the Swedish summer breeze made us think twice about jumping straight in.

Back at the cottage, we settled into the garden with mugs of tea and watched the children chase a football around the grass. It struck me how easily we'd slipped into this slower rhythm. At home we're always rushing between activities, but here the biggest decision was whether to light the barbecue or just have sandwiches on the veranda. The mishap on the drive already felt like part of the story, something we'd laugh about later when recounting our Swedish adventure to friends.

As the evening drew in, we lit a few candles on the outdoor table and enjoyed the last of the daylight filtering through the trees. It reminded me that sometimes the best holidays aren't about ticking off sights or filling every hour with plans. They're about arriving somewhere ordinary and realising it's exactly what you needed.
