About Halland
We had only just pulled off the E6 when the sat nav decided to play its usual trick and send us down a single track lane that looked more like someone's driveway than a proper road. Twenty minutes later we were reversing into a ditch trying to let a tractor past, which is how we ended up laughing so hard that we nearly missed the turning for the little red cottage tucked behind a stand of birch trees. That small mishap set the tone for the whole stay. Instead of heading straight into the village we just kept following whichever gravel track looked interesting, and Halland rewarded us with the sort of quiet discoveries you only make when you are properly lost.

The first afternoon we wandered out behind the house and found a narrow footpath that wound between meadows full of buttercups and grazing sheep. We had no map and no plan, just a bottle of water and the vague idea that we would turn back if the path got too muddy. After half an hour the trees opened onto a tiny lake we had never seen on any website. A couple of locals were quietly fishing from an old wooden jetty, and one of them waved us over to point out where the pike liked to hide. We spent the next hour sitting on the grass listening to nothing but the occasional splash and the wind in the reeds. It felt miles from anywhere, even though we later realised we had only walked about twenty minutes from our front door.

The next morning the same spirit of accidental wandering took us along the coast road in the opposite direction from the usual tourist beaches. We parked where the tarmac ended and followed a sandy track between pine trees until we reached a stretch of shoreline that was completely empty except for driftwood and a few oyster catchers. The water was that particular shade of Baltic grey that looks cold until you dip a toe in and discover it is surprisingly pleasant. We collected a pocketful of smooth white stones without any real purpose except that they felt nice in the hand, then sat on a log watching a heron fish in the shallows. Neither of us spoke much; there was something soothing about not knowing exactly where we were or how long we had been there.

Even the evenings seemed to unfold without any effort. One night we took a wrong turn on the way back from buying bread and ended up at a small farm shop that only opened when the owner felt like it. We bought fresh strawberries and a jar of honey while the farmer's dog inspected our shoes, then carried everything back to the cottage and ate it on the little wooden deck as the light faded. It was the kind of simple supper that somehow tasted better because we had not planned it at all.

Looking back, the best parts of the trip were never the things we had circled on a map. They were the quiet corners we stumbled across because the sat nav had let us down and we had decided to enjoy getting lost instead. Halland felt generous in that way, happy to show us its smaller, gentler side if we were willing to slow down and let the day lead us wherever it wanted to go.
