About Halland
We set off from Gothenburg in good spirits, the satnav promising an easy couple of hours south through Halland's quiet countryside. Halfway there, we decided the little blue sign for a bakery looked too tempting to ignore, pulled in, and promptly locked the keys inside the hire car with the engine still running. After twenty minutes of mild panic and one very patient local with a coat hanger, we were back on the road, slightly red-faced but laughing at ourselves.

By the time we reached the house near Jaelluntofta, the sun was already low and golden. The place sat at the end of a short gravel track, surrounded by tall pines and open grass that sloped gently toward a small lake. It felt instantly welcoming, the sort of simple wooden building that makes you want to kick your shoes off straight away. We unpacked the car in a leisurely fashion, then carried our books and a blanket straight out to the wooden deck. There was no rush to do anything else.

The next morning we woke to birdsong and the smell of coffee drifting from the kitchen. We ate breakfast outside, watching the light move across the water, and decided that exploring could wait. Instead we spent most of the day drifting between the deck chairs and the hammock strung between two birch trees. I read half a novel I had been meaning to finish for months, occasionally glancing up when a dragonfly skimmed past. My partner dozed with a cap over his face, and neither of us felt the slightest urge to move.

Later we wandered a short way along the lakeside path, just far enough to find a little jetty where someone had left an old rowing boat tied up. We did not take it out; we simply sat on the planks with our feet in the cool water and listened to the quiet lap of waves against the wood. On the way back we picked up a few bits from the small shop in Unnaryd, enough for a simple supper, and that was our big outing for the day.

By the third afternoon I had stopped checking my phone altogether. The signal was patchy anyway, and it felt oddly freeing to let messages wait. We made a small fire in the garden pit one evening, more for the smell of woodsmoke than for warmth, and toasted a couple of sausages while the sky turned pink. The only sounds were the crackle of the flames and the occasional splash from a fish in the lake.

Looking back, the car-key episode seems like the perfect introduction to a week that refused to be hurried. I had arrived with vague plans for day trips and proper walks, yet the house and the sunshine quietly talked me out of most of them. There is something gently corrective about sitting still in a place this peaceful; it reminds you how rarely you actually stop. By the end of the stay I felt lighter, as though the slow rhythm of those days had quietly reset something I had not realised needed resetting.
