We set off from the ferry in high spirits, convinced that a quick detour via the nearest supermarket would sort our supplies before reaching the Hishult house in Halland. The satnav had other ideas, though, and we ended up circling the same roundabout three times while the kids argued over who got to hold the shopping list. By the time we pulled up the gravel drive, the boot was full of slightly squashed bread and a bag of oddly shaped tomatoes that had rolled under the seat. The house itself looked exactly like the pictures, pale wood and big windows looking out over quiet fields, but the first thing we noticed was the kitchen. It was bigger than ours at home and already stocked with proper pans, which felt like a small victory after the supermarket detour.

We unpacked in record time because everyone was suddenly starving. The fridge was empty, so we decided the sensible thing was to cook straight away rather than drive back out. I had grand plans for a simple pasta with those tomatoes and some garlic we had grabbed, but the hob controls were in Swedish and I managed to turn on the extractor fan instead of the burner twice before getting it right. The result was edible if a bit over-salted, and we ate it at the big wooden table while the evening light stretched across the garden. The children declared it the best holiday dinner ever, which I suspect had more to do with the novelty than my cooking skills.

The next morning we walked into the village for the little Saturday market. It was nothing grand, just a handful of stalls under a covered area selling fresh berries, smoked fish, and loaves still warm from the oven. We bought far more than we needed, including a jar of cloudberry jam that the stallholder insisted we try on the spot. Back at the house we spread everything across the kitchen counter and attempted a proper Swedish-style breakfast. The smoked fish was excellent, though I managed to drop a slice on the floor while trying to explain to my partner how the coffee machine worked. We rescued it with the five-second rule and carried on eating on the terrace.

By the second evening we had settled into a rhythm of market foraging followed by kitchen experiments. One night we tried making meatballs from scratch using a recipe scribbled on the back of the receipt. They turned out surprisingly good once we stopped arguing about how much breadcrumbs to add. The house had a barbecue outside, so the following lunch we grilled some of the local sausages and ate them with new potatoes bought that morning. Sitting there with the smell of charcoal drifting over the lawn, I realised how rarely we actually cook together at home without the usual rush of weeknight life getting in the way. The small kitchen mishaps suddenly felt like part of the point rather than failures.

Even the simple act of making sandwiches for a picnic became an event. We would slice the fresh bread, layer it with cheese and cucumber, then argue gently about whether to add mustard. The whole process took longer than it should have, but nobody minded. By the end of the week the fridge was a cheerful jumble of half-used jars and leftover berries, and the kitchen table carried the faint scent of whatever we had cooked the night before. It struck me that the best part of staying here was not the scenery or the quiet, but the way the days had rearranged themselves around food shopping, chopping, and the occasional small disaster in the kitchen. We left with a bag of cloudberry jam and a renewed appreciation for the joy of slightly overcooked pasta eaten in good company.
