We'd barely left the ferry when the satnav decided to test our patience, sending us down a lane so narrow the wing mirrors nearly kissed the hedgerows. By the time we reached the little red cottage in Hishult, the sun was already low and my pride was in tatters after insisting I knew a shortcut. The house itself felt instantly welcoming, with its simple wooden porch and a garden that sloped gently toward a line of silver birches. Inside, the kitchen smelled faintly of fresh coffee left by the owners, and the living room had that cosy, lived-in feel that makes you want to kick off your shoes straight away.

After unpacking, we set off on what was meant to be a quick stroll to stretch our legs before dinner. The map on my phone showed a footpath running behind the cottage, so we followed it without much thought. Within minutes the path narrowed into a mossy track that wound between tall pines and low stone walls. We kept expecting it to loop back, yet every turn revealed something new. A small clearing opened up with a weathered wooden bench overlooking a meadow dotted with buttercups, and further along we stumbled across an old stone well half-hidden by brambles. The well had a simple wooden lid and a rope that looked as though it hadn't been used in years, yet the water inside was clear enough to reflect the sky.

We wandered on, half-laughing at how completely turned around we were, and soon found ourselves on a quiet gravel track that led past a cluster of red farm buildings. A friendly collie bounded out to greet us, followed by an older woman carrying a basket of eggs. She pointed us toward a tiny lake just beyond the trees, insisting it was the best place for a quiet swim if we didn't mind the chill. Sure enough, the water was still and dark, ringed by reeds and a handful of rowing boats pulled up on the bank. We sat on a fallen log and watched a pair of ducks glide past, the only sounds the occasional splash and the wind in the leaves.

By the time we found our way back to the cottage, the light had faded to that soft blue-grey of a Swedish summer evening. I realised then how rarely we allow ourselves to get properly lost these days, and how much we had gained by letting the path decide where we went. The mishap with the satnav had set the tone, but the real discovery was how much quiet beauty sits just beyond the obvious routes. We cooked a simple supper in the warm kitchen, opened the windows to let in the scent of pine, and promised ourselves another wander the next morning, this time without any map at all.
