We set off from the ferry terminal with the usual mix of excitement and mild panic over whether we'd packed enough snacks. The sat nav led us smoothly through the Swedish countryside until we reached the outskirts of Halmstad, where a small but perfectly timed wrong turn sent us down a gravel track that ended at someone's garden shed. After a sheepish three-point turn and a wave to the amused chap mowing his lawn, we finally pulled up at the little cottage tucked behind a neat hedge.

The moment we stepped out of the car the fresh air hit us, carrying that clean, slightly salty scent you only seem to get near the coast here in Halland. The cottage itself looked exactly as we'd hoped, wooden cladding painted a soft red, white window frames catching the afternoon light, and a small wooden deck with a couple of folding chairs already waiting. Inside it felt instantly homely, with a cosy living area, a kitchen that had everything we needed for simple meals, and two bedrooms that promised proper nights of sleep after long days outside.

The children wasted no time claiming their beds and racing out to explore the garden, which turned out to be bigger than it first appeared. A short path at the back led straight to a quiet stretch of woodland, perfect for an impromptu game of hide-and-seek before tea. We unpacked the basics, put the kettle on, and sat on the deck with our first proper cuppa, listening to the birds and the distant hum of the town. It felt like the sort of place where you could happily do very little and still feel you'd had a proper break.

Later that evening we wandered into Halmstad itself, just a short stroll away, and found a little supermarket for fresh bread and some local cheese. The town centre was lively without being overwhelming, with a pleasant mix of old buildings and modern shops, and we treated ourselves to ice creams by the river before heading back. By the time we returned the sun was low and the cottage looked even more inviting with its warm lights on.

What struck me most on that first evening was how quickly the place felt familiar. After the slightly chaotic arrival, everything seemed to slow down, and I realised I'd been so focused on getting the journey right that I'd almost forgotten why we'd come in the first place. Sitting there with the family, watching the last bit of daylight fade over the trees, I felt properly grateful for the chance to switch off and simply enjoy being together in a place that asked nothing more of us than to relax.
