About Halland
I had it all mapped out before we left the ferry, the sat nav confidently promising a straight run down to Grimsholmen just outside Falkenberg. Then the battery died right as we hit the last roundabout, leaving us circling like confused tourists while the locals on bikes zipped past with sympathetic waves. By the time we rolled up the gravel track to the little red cottage, I was half convinced we had arrived at the wrong place entirely, until a neighbour in a faded fishing jumper wandered over with a thermos and asked if we needed rescuing.

He introduced himself as Lars and immediately launched into a story about the time the power went out for three whole days after a storm knocked a tree onto the line. Before I could even thank him he was offering to lend us his old extension cable and insisting we borrow his spare torch, which turned out to be heavier than a small dog. His wife, Ingrid, appeared moments later with a plate of cinnamon buns still warm from the oven, explaining that new arrivals always needed something sweet to shake off the journey. We stood there chatting in the mild evening light while they pointed out whose garden had the best raspberries and whose dog liked to wander over for scraps.

Their easy way of folding us into the neighbourhood felt instantly familiar, even though we had only just met. Lars kept calling the cottage “the old summer place” and joked that it had probably seen more rain than sunshine over the years, yet he said it with such fondness that I found myself looking at the peeling paintwork differently. Ingrid asked about our jobs back home and then launched into her own tale of working at the bakery in Falkenberg before retiring, complete with impressions of difficult customers that had us both laughing. When I mentioned we had forgotten milk, she simply handed over a carton from her own fridge and waved away any talk of payment.

Later, as the light faded, another neighbour strolled past with his spaniel and stopped to ask how we were settling in. He recommended the small harbour cafe for fresh fish the next morning and warned us that the gulls there were bolder than any he had met elsewhere. We ended up swapping stories about terrible holiday photos until the dog grew bored and tugged him onward. Standing on the porch afterwards, watching the last of the sky turn pink over the fields, I realised how quickly the mishap with the sat nav had turned into something far nicer than any planned itinerary could have managed. The cottage itself was comfortable enough, but it was these chance conversations that made the place feel less like a rental and more like a borrowed corner of someone else’s life.
