About Halland
We set off for our week in Glommen with the kind of optimism that only comes from checking the forecast three times and still packing jumpers. The drive from the ferry felt longer than expected, partly because the sat nav decided the scenic route was better, and partly because I had misread the last turning and taken us down a narrow lane that ended in somebody's driveway. A friendly local reversed out to let us turn around, and we both laughed at how quickly our grand arrival had turned into a polite U-turn in front of a garden shed. By the time we reached the house the light was already fading, which suited the late-autumn mood perfectly.

The air outside felt crisp and clean, carrying that unmistakable scent of salt and damp leaves that seems stronger here than anywhere else on the coast. Inside, the wood burner was already laid, and the first thing I did was strike a match and watch the flames catch while the kettle came to the boil. It felt good to arrive somewhere that expected you to slow down. The windows looked straight out across low fields that had been cut back for winter, and the sea sat in the distance like a flat grey plate. We had chosen this time of year on purpose, wanting fewer crowds and the chance to see the coast without the usual summer brightness.

That first evening we walked the short path to the beach, coats zipped to the chin and hands in pockets. The tide was out, leaving wide stretches of wet sand that reflected the last of the light, and the only sounds were our footsteps and the occasional cry of a gull. It was colder than we had expected, but that somehow made the hot chocolate waiting back at the house taste better. We had planned to cook something elaborate, yet ended up with simple pasta and the last of the bread from the ferry, eaten at the kitchen table while rain started tapping on the roof. There was something comforting about the ordinary meal after the small travel mishap earlier.

The next morning brought the kind of pale sunlight that makes everything look softer. We drove the short distance into Falkenberg for fresh rolls and coffee, then came back to sit on the covered veranda with blankets over our knees. The garden had already begun its winter tidy-up, with only a few late roses still holding on, and the quiet felt almost deliberate. I found myself thinking how easy it is to rush through seasons without noticing them, and how this short break had already made me slow down without even trying. By the time we headed out again for a gentle stroll along the cycle path that runs behind the dunes, the clouds had gathered once more, but it did not matter. The house felt like the right place to return to, warm and waiting, while outside the season did what it always does best: remind you that you are simply passing through.
