We set off from the ferry in high spirits, the sat nav promising a straightforward hop to our little Frillesas cottage, yet somehow we ended up circling the same roundabout three times because I had confidently ignored the final turn. By the time we bumped down the gravel track the cottage looked exactly as promised, neat wooden cladding, a tidy deck and a view that already felt wider than our garden back home.

The first evening was mild enough for a short stroll along the coastal path that runs just behind the property. We followed it for maybe twenty minutes, shoes crunching on pine needles, until we reached a small sandy cove where the water was calm and almost warm. The plan had been to drive further south the next morning for a proper day hike, but the weather had other ideas.

A sudden shift in the wind brought heavy clouds and that soft, insistent Halland drizzle that soaks you without ever feeling dramatic. Instead of sulking indoors we grabbed waterproofs and set off on foot from the cottage door, following the same coastal track in the opposite direction. The rain made the pine smell sharper and turned every little clearing into a miniature waterfall. We laughed at how quickly our boots filled with water and how the dog, who had refused a coat earlier, now looked like a drowned rat yet refused to turn back.

By midday the showers eased and weak sunshine broke through, so we kept walking, this time along the low cliffs where the path widens into boardwalks over marshy patches. The sea stayed grey but the air felt fresh and the occasional bench gave us an excuse to stop and share the slightly squashed sandwiches we had thrown together in the kitchen. We met a couple of locals out with their dogs who nodded hello and pointed out a shortcut back through the woods that saved us a soggy detour.

The walk turned into an accidental full afternoon, eight kilometres in total, and we returned to the cottage pleasantly tired with salt on our faces and pine needles stuck to our socks. Sitting on the deck later, mugs of tea in hand, I realised how rarely we let the weather dictate the day back home. Here it felt less like a setback and more like an invitation to slow down, to notice the way the light changes over the water and how good simple food tastes after a long walk. The cottage itself stayed in the background, a dry place to hang wet jackets and a warm spot to plan tomorrow, but the real story was the coast right on our doorstep and how a bit of rain had turned a planned drive into something far more memorable.
