We set off from Gothenburg in high spirits, the boot packed with hiking boots and far too many snacks, only to discover halfway that I'd grabbed the wrong satnav postcode and sent us twenty minutes in the opposite direction. By the time we pulled up at the little red cottage near Fegen lake the sun was already high and the air smelled of pine and warm grass. The place looked exactly as I'd hoped, a simple wooden house tucked among birches with a deck that caught the evening light, and after the earlier detour it felt like a proper reward just to step inside and drop our bags.

We spent the first afternoon walking straight out the back gate onto the forest paths that circle the lake, the ground springy underfoot and the water flashing between the trees whenever the trail dipped close to the shore. It was meant to be a gentle wander, but the weather had other ideas; a sudden warm breeze picked up and the temperature climbed so quickly that we peeled off layers within minutes and ended up wading at the little stony beach instead of finishing the full loop. That unplanned dip became the pattern for the next few days.

Each morning we'd set out with a rough plan to follow the coastal track that runs a couple of miles south from the village, but the bright Halland sun kept persuading us to linger. One afternoon we started along the gravel path that hugs the shoreline near the nature reserve, intending to reach the bird-watching hide before lunch, yet the heat made the climb over the low dunes feel longer than it should. We stopped every twenty minutes to share a bottle of water and watch swans drift past, laughing at how quickly our ambitious route had turned into a series of short, lazy stretches between shady patches of pine.

By the third day we'd stopped pretending we had a schedule at all. The cottage's little garden became our base between walks; we'd return sandy and pink-cheeked, rinse our feet under the outdoor tap, then sit on the deck with coffee while the light shifted across the lake. The gentle self-reflection came on our last walk, when the path narrowed between tall reeds and I realised I'd spent the whole holiday chasing perfect conditions instead of simply enjoying the ones we had. The mishap with the satnav had set the tone from the start, reminding me that small detours often lead to the best bits, whether that's an unexpected swim or an extra hour watching the sunset ripple on the water.
