We set off from the ferry with the satnav cheerfully promising a quick hop to our little place near Falkenberg, yet somehow managed to take the turning for Ullared twice before realising the sign for Aetran had been hiding behind a lorry. By the time we bumped down the gravel track, the sun was already high and the mishap felt more like an accidental scenic detour than a proper mistake. The house itself sat quietly among pines, its wooden deck catching the first proper warmth of the day, and we both agreed there was no point rushing to unpack.

Instead we carried the cool bag straight outside and arranged ourselves on the garden chairs with the sort of contentment that only comes after a long drive. The air smelled faintly of resin and cut grass, and a gentle breeze kept the midges at bay without any effort on our part. We spent the first afternoon doing nothing more ambitious than watching the light move across the lawn while the kettle whistled from the open kitchen door. Every so often one of us would remember a forgotten item in the car, yet neither of us actually got up to fetch it.

The next morning brought the same easy rhythm. After a slow breakfast of bread and local cheese we wandered the short path that leads past neighbouring cottages, waving at a couple who were already settled with books on their own deck. Further along the lane we found a small stretch of open meadow where the grass felt warm under bare feet, so we stayed there for an hour simply listening to the birds and the distant hum of a tractor. By the time we wandered back, the sun had shifted enough to make the deck the obvious place to settle again.

Reading turned out to be the main occupation. I had brought two paperbacks and finished the first before lunch without once checking the time. My partner dozed in the shade, occasionally murmuring about how odd it felt to have no plan whatsoever. We both laughed at the thought that we had travelled all this way just to sit still, yet neither of us suggested doing anything else. In the late afternoon we strolled the half-mile into the nearest village for an ice cream, then returned before the evening chill arrived, content that we had explored quite enough for one day.

Looking back, the journey mishap now feels like the perfect introduction to the whole stay. It set the tone for letting small things slide and for noticing how little we actually needed. The house offered shade when the sun grew strong and a table big enough for our books and coffee cups, and that seemed to be all the entertainment required. By the third day we had both stopped reaching for our phones except to take the occasional photo of the pine shadows stretching across the deck. The quiet had crept in so gradually that we only noticed it when we realised we had gone hours without speaking, yet the silence felt companionable rather than empty.

There is something gently corrective about a place that rewards doing so little. I had arrived expecting to fill every hour with walks or drives, but the sunshine and the simple comfort of the deck kept pulling us back to stillness. By the end of the week I found myself hoping the next holiday would be just as uneventful, and just as restorative.
