We'd barely pulled into the gravel drive at the Askome cottage when the satnav decided to play its final trick. It cheerfully announced we'd arrived, then sent us straight into a ditch that wasn't even on the map. My partner laughed so hard she dropped the keys, and I spent the next ten minutes trying to look like I knew what I was doing while the front wheels spun uselessly. By the time we were properly parked, the cottage already felt like it was chuckling at us.

It was a proper Swedish summerhouse, all pale wood and big windows looking out toward the trees. The air smelled of pine and warm grass, and the first thing we did was kick off our shoes and wander straight out the back. A narrow path led down toward the coast, and we followed it without even unpacking properly. The trail was easy going, just soft earth and the occasional root, and after twenty minutes we reached a stretch of rocky shoreline where the water looked almost silver in the afternoon light.

We'd planned a longer coastal walk the next day, maybe heading toward the little harbour a couple of miles away, but the weather had other ideas. The morning started bright enough, so we set off with packed lunches and far too much optimism. Half an hour in the clouds rolled over like they'd been waiting for us, and the wind picked up enough to make the trees sound like they were whispering secrets. We turned back sooner than planned, stopping at a sheltered spot to eat our sandwiches while rain tapped on our jackets. It felt less like a failure and more like the coast was gently reminding us who was in charge.

That afternoon the sun came back out, and we tried again with shorter ambitions. We walked along the shoreline path in the other direction, finding little coves where the water was calm enough for a quick paddle. My feet got properly soaked, and I spent the rest of the walk with squelching trainers that made every step sound ridiculous. Still, the views were worth it. Rocky outcrops gave way to stretches of pale sand, and every so often we'd spot a little wooden jetty stretching into the water like it belonged in a postcard.

By the time we got back to the cottage, the light was starting to soften and the midges had come out for their evening shift. We sat on the veranda with mugs of tea, watching the trees sway and listening to the occasional bird call from somewhere in the woods. I found myself thinking about how easily we'd let the weather change our plans, and how little it actually mattered. Sometimes the best bits of a holiday are the ones you didn't schedule. The cottage felt like the right sort of place for that kind of discovery, simple and unhurried, with just enough space to spread out and not much else to do except watch the coast change its mind.
