About Halland
The kitchen greeted us first. It was simple and spotless, with a decent hob, a fridge already humming, and a table big enough for the three of us to spread out maps and shopping lists. We had planned to cook most nights, so the first job was finding food. The nearest village shop was only a couple of minutes down the road, though calling it a shop felt generous; it was really a small room attached to a petrol station. Still, they stocked fresh bread, local cheese, and those thin Swedish sausages that sizzle nicely in a pan. That evening we attempted our first self-catering meal. I chopped onions with more confidence than skill and managed to set off the smoke alarm twice before the pasta was ready. My partner took over stirring while our friend opened a bottle of local cider we had picked up earlier. The result was edible rather than impressive, but we sat outside under the string lights and finished every scrap. The quiet was so complete we could hear the occasional car on the main road half a mile away. Next morning we drove the short distance to the weekly market in the next village. Stalls offered strawberries still warm from the fields, new potatoes, and smoked fish wrapped in paper. We bought far too much and spent the afternoon back at the cottage trying to use it all. I attempted a simple potato salad while the others grilled mackerel on the little barbecue. Halfway through, I realised I had forgotten the mustard dressing, so we ate it plain and declared it rustic. The fish, however, turned out perfectly crisp and we lingered at the table until the midges forced us inside. By the third day our cooking attempts had become a running joke. One evening I tried making pancakes using a recipe I vaguely remembered, only to produce something closer to scrambled eggs in a pan. We ended up eating them anyway, topped with the leftover strawberries and a generous spoon of the thick cream from the market. Sitting there, sticky fingered and slightly defeated, I caught myself thinking how rarely we slow down enough to make a proper mess in the kitchen at home. It felt oddly satisfying to get it wrong on holiday. We never ventured far, content instead to walk the lane each morning for fresh rolls and to plan the next meal around whatever looked good that day. The cottage itself stayed in the background, a tidy, comfortable base rather than the star of the trip. What stayed with me most were the small rituals: unpacking shopping onto the wooden counter, the shared laughter when something burned, and the quiet satisfaction of eating food we had chosen and cooked ourselves under the Halland sky. |
