About Gotland
We arrived in Visby on a Friday afternoon after a slightly chaotic ferry crossing from the mainland. My partner had insisted on bringing far too many snacks, which promptly spilled across the car seat when we hit a bump, leaving us both sticky with crisp crumbs and laughing like idiots. By the time we found the little house tucked just outside the old town walls, the sun was already low and golden, and all we wanted was a cup of tea and somewhere to sit still.

The place was perfect for exactly that. A neat garden with a couple of wooden chairs faced a stretch of grass that caught the afternoon light beautifully, and the inside felt bright and simple, with big windows letting in the warmth. We dropped our bags, made tea, and did not move for the next hour. The mishap with the crisps had somehow set the tone; nothing needed to be hurried or impressive.

Over the next few days we slipped easily into a gentle rhythm of doing very little. Mornings began with coffee on the patio while we watched bees drift between the flowers, then perhaps a slow wander down towards the harbour for fresh bread and whatever looked good at the market stalls. We never planned much further ahead than that. Some afternoons we simply stayed put, reading on the grass or dozing in the shade with the faint sound of church bells drifting over the rooftops. The old town itself was only a short stroll away, and we enjoyed poking about its cobbled lanes when the mood took us, stopping for an ice cream or to admire the roses spilling over garden walls.

One morning we rented bicycles from a shop near the harbour and pedalled lazily along the coast path, stopping whenever a nice patch of shade appeared. We did not reach any dramatic viewpoints or famous ruins, just a quiet stretch of shoreline where we sat with our feet in the water and shared a packet of biscuits. It felt like enough. Evenings were spent back at the house, cooking simple meals with ingredients from the local shops and watching the light fade over the garden.

Looking back, the best part was how little we actually achieved. The ferry snack disaster had reminded us that plans often go sideways anyway, so we might as well lean into the slow version. By the end of the week I realised how rarely I let myself do so little without feeling guilty about it. Sitting in that sunny garden, with nothing more pressing than turning a page or deciding whether to have another coffee, felt like a proper luxury.
