About Gotland
The cottage sat just outside the old town walls, a short walk from the harbour and the nearest sandy stretch of beach. When we pulled up, the low evening sun was already catching the pale wooden boards and the little gravel path that led to the door. Inside it felt instantly welcoming, with a bright kitchen that opened straight onto a deck scattered with mismatched chairs. We dropped our bags, made a quick cup of tea, and wandered out to watch the light fade over the fields. The next morning we did almost nothing at all, and it was perfect. Breakfast stretched into late morning because neither of us could be bothered to decide what came next. Eventually we wandered down the lane towards the sea, stopping every few minutes to look at wildflowers or listen to the birds. The beach was quiet, just a couple of families and someone walking a very determined dog. We found a spot on the sand, spread out a blanket, and spent the next few hours reading in the sunshine, occasionally glancing up when a sailboat drifted past on the horizon. Lunch was whatever we had brought from the ferry plus a couple of cardamom buns from a bakery near the harbour. We ate them slowly on the deck, letting crumbs fall where they liked. In the afternoon we strolled into Visby itself, not with any plan, just to wander the cobbled streets inside the walls and admire the roses tumbling over garden fences. We bought ice cream, sat on a bench overlooking the water, and watched the tourists come and go while we stayed put. Back at the cottage the evenings were the best part. We lit the little outdoor lantern, poured a glass of wine, and simply sat listening to the quiet. No agenda, no rushing to the next thing, just the soft sound of waves somewhere beyond the trees and the occasional creak of the wooden steps as one of us shifted in a chair. I caught myself checking my phone less and less, which felt like a small victory. By the second day the rhythm had settled into something wonderfully ordinary. Mornings began with coffee on the deck, afternoons drifted between the beach and the shade of the garden, and evenings ended with a book left open on my lap because I had dozed off again. The sunglasses mishap already seemed like a distant memory, and in its place was the simple pleasure of doing very little in a place that asked nothing more of us. |
