About Gotland
I set off for Gotland feeling rather pleased with myself, map in hand and ferry booked weeks ahead, but the small but funny mishap came the moment I stepped off the boat in Visby. My rucksack strap caught on a railing, tipping half my snacks onto the cobbles, and a helpful local had to chase a runaway apple while I apologised in broken Swedish. Red faced and already laughing at myself, I caught the short bus to the cottage on the edge of town, the kind of simple wooden place with a sunny deck and a view straight onto quiet fields.

By the time I unlocked the door the afternoon light was already soft and golden, and any plans for sightseeing melted away. The first evening was spent doing almost nothing at all, just sitting on the deck with a paperback and a cup of tea while the sky slowly turned pink. A gentle breeze carried the smell of cut grass and the faint sound of someone mowing further down the lane, and I realised I had not checked my phone in hours.

The next morning I woke to birdsong and decided the best use of the day was to stay put. I wandered into the small garden with my book again, moving my chair every so often to follow the patches of sun, and only got up when hunger nudged me towards the kitchen. The fridge was stocked with local bread and cheese from the shop five minutes away, so lunch became another slow affair on the deck, crumbs shared with a curious sparrow.

In the afternoons I took short strolls along the nearby lanes, never more than a mile or two, just enough to stretch my legs before turning back for another chapter and another cup of coffee. The cottage felt perfectly placed for this sort of idleness, close enough to pop into Visby for a fresh cinnamon bun if the mood struck, yet far enough that the only real sounds were the wind in the trees and the occasional bicycle bell.

One afternoon I found myself watching a ladybird make its way across the table for what felt like an entire hour, and instead of feeling restless I simply felt content. It struck me that I had come here expecting to tick off sights and instead I was measuring time by the angle of the sun on the deck and the number of pages read. The mishap with the apples on arrival already seemed like a distant memory, replaced by the quiet satisfaction of doing very little in very good weather.

By the final evening I was perfectly at ease with the rhythm of the place, and when the last rays slipped behind the fields I closed my book without a single regret about the plans I had never made.
