We set off from the ferry in high spirits, only to discover halfway to the cottage that I'd managed to leave the keys in the car boot. After a good ten minutes of rummaging and mild panic, my partner fished them out from under a bag of crisps and we finally pulled up to our little Visby retreat just as the afternoon sun started to settle. The place sat quietly behind a low hedge, its pale wooden walls catching the light in a way that made the whole street feel slower.

Inside, everything was simple and welcoming. A small kitchen with a kettle already filled, a couple of mismatched mugs on the shelf, and a sofa that looked like it had hosted more naps than serious conversations. We dropped our bags, opened the back door, and stepped straight into a patch of sunlight that stretched across the garden. There was a wooden table with two chairs and a view of nothing much except sky and the tops of nearby roofs. It was perfect.

The next morning we did very little, and it felt like an achievement. We took our coffee outside, watched a neighbour's cat patrol the fence line, and decided that exploring could wait. By midday the sun had warmed the garden enough for a book and a blanket, so we stayed put. I read the same page three times before giving up and simply listening to the quiet, broken only by the occasional bicycle bell from the lane. Later we wandered a few streets into town, found a bakery still selling warm cinnamon buns, and carried them back without any grand plan. The rest of the afternoon slipped away between bites and stretches of comfortable silence.

By the third day the rhythm had settled into something easy. Mornings meant a slow walk past the old town wall, just far enough to stretch our legs before the sun pulled us back. Afternoons were for reading in the garden or napping with the door open, letting whatever breeze there was drift through. I caught myself checking my phone less often, the usual urge to document everything replaced by a vague contentment at simply being there. One evening we lit a couple of candles on the table outside and ate bread and cheese until the light faded, both of us too relaxed to bother with proper plates.

Looking back, the mishap with the keys feels like the best kind of introduction. It forced us to stop rushing from the very first moment, and everything after that followed the same unhurried line. Gotland in summer seems to reward exactly that approach.
