We set off from Visby on a sunny afternoon, the hire car packed with far too many snacks and a map that insisted on being folded the wrong way. The road to Vallstena wound through open fields and low stone walls, and I was feeling rather pleased with myself for managing the left-hand drive without incident. Then the satnav cheerfully announced we had arrived, right as we bumped into a gravel track that looked nothing like the tidy drive in the photos. We reversed, turned, reversed again, and finally realised the entrance was the smaller track we had dismissed as a farm path. By the time we pulled up, the car was coated in dust and my pride was slightly dented.

The house itself sat quietly among meadows, its red wooden walls glowing in the late light. Stepping out, the first thing that struck me was the stillness, broken only by the sound of a tractor somewhere in the distance. Inside it felt instantly welcoming, with wide windows letting in the smell of grass and pine. We dropped our bags and decided the best way to shake off the journey was a short walk to stretch our legs before supper.

The coast path began just beyond the fields, a gentle trail that followed the low cliffs northwards. The weather was perfect for it, warm enough that we left our jackets in the car and set out in shirtsleeves. We followed the edge where the grass gave way to pale rock, stopping every so often to watch the water glitter. A sudden breeze picked up as we reached a small cove, and within minutes the sky had clouded over, turning the sea from blue to a restless grey. We laughed at how quickly the forecast had changed its mind and turned back, grateful we had not ventured farther.

By the time we reached the house again the rain had started, light but steady, so we spent the evening on the covered veranda instead, watching the drops race down the window panes. It felt oddly restful to have our plans altered by something so ordinary. I found myself thinking how rarely I let the weather decide anything at home, and how much calmer the evening had become because of it.

The next morning the sun returned, and we headed out again along the same path, this time carrying a thermos and no particular schedule. The air was cooler after the rain, the grass still damp underfoot, but the light on the water made every step feel worthwhile. We walked until our legs ached pleasantly, then turned back when the clouds began to gather once more. It was the sort of day that reminded me why we had chosen Gotland in the first place, not for ticking off sights but for letting the coast and the weather shape the hours as they pleased.
