We set off from Visby in our little hire car on a bright but breezy afternoon, maps spread across the dashboard and snacks already half gone. Everything was going smoothly until I confidently turned right at a junction that turned out to be a gravel track leading straight into someone's back garden. A man in overalls appeared from behind a shed, waving his arms and laughing so hard he had to lean on his wheelbarrow. Once we sorted out the directions, he insisted we follow him the proper way, chatting the whole time about how many tourists still mix up the lanes every summer.

By the time we pulled up at the Tofta place, our accidental guide had become our first proper introduction to the area. He waved us off with a promise to bring fresh eggs the next morning if we fancied them. The little red cottage sat quietly among pine trees, its wooden deck already catching the late sun. We were barely unpacking the boot when an older woman from the neighbouring plot wandered over with a basket of strawberries, asking if we needed help finding the best swimming spots along the coast. She stayed for a cup of tea and told us about the time her grandson tried to surf on a bodyboard during a proper storm.

Later that evening we walked down to the nearby beach for a quick paddle. A couple we met there were locals who ran a small cafe just up the road. They gave us tips about the best time to avoid the midges and asked whether we planned to try the traditional Gotland pancakes at the market. Their easy chatter made us feel less like visitors and more like people who had simply arrived a bit late to the conversation.

The next morning brought another neighbourly visit, this time from a retired fisherman who lived a few plots away. He showed us how to spot the best mussels along the shore and chuckled when I admitted I had never cooked them myself. We stood chatting by the water's edge while he explained which winds meant good fishing and which ones meant staying indoors with coffee and cake instead.

What struck me most was how naturally everyone folded us into their day. I had expected a quiet, private sort of holiday, yet here we were being gently pulled into local rhythms without even trying. It made me wonder how often we rush past these small exchanges at home, too focused on our own plans to notice when someone is simply being kind. By the end of that first full day, the cottage already felt less like a rental and more like a borrowed corner of someone else's ordinary, generous life.
