We set off from the ferry at Visby with the satnav confidently promising a straight run to our little Tofta cottage, only to discover that Swedish road signs have a playful streak. One wrong turn down a gravel track and we were suddenly bumping past fields of rapeseed with no house in sight, the car kicking up a cloud of dust that made us both cough and laugh. By the time we finally pulled up to the red wooden place with its neat white trim, the sun was already sliding towards the horizon and our stomachs were rumbling.

The first thing that struck me was how quiet everything felt. No traffic noise, just the soft rustle of pine needles and the occasional call of a bird I couldnt name. We unpacked the bags in record time, then decided to stretch our legs before supper. A narrow path led away from the garden gate and, without really meaning to, we followed it. It wound between low stone walls and clumps of wildflowers until it opened onto a tiny cove wed never have spotted from the road. The water was that clear Nordic blue, almost turquoise in the evening light, and a single rowing boat lay upside down on the pebbles. We sat on a flat rock and watched a heron fish until our legs went numb.

Back on the path we got properly turned around. Instead of heading home we found ourselves in a small clearing where someone had left an old wooden bench and a stack of driftwood. A handwritten sign nailed to a tree simply said "rastplats," which we guessed meant rest stop. We took the hint, shared the emergency chocolate bar from the glovebox, and watched the sky turn pink. It felt like the sort of place locals keep to themselves, and stumbling on it by accident made the evening feel properly ours.

By the time we retraced our steps the cottage lights were glowing through the trees. We cooked pasta on the little stove, opened the windows wide, and listened to the crickets start up outside. I kept thinking how easy it is, when you have a plan, to miss the bits that actually stay with you. Getting lost on our first afternoon had handed us a pocket-sized beach and a bench in the woods, both of which felt more memorable than any itinerary could have managed. Tomorrow wed probably try to get lost again.
