The drive up to Stora Hammars took longer than we'd planned, mainly because someone (me) had insisted on taking the scenic route through the countryside. By the time we finally pulled into the gravel drive, the sun was already low and my phone battery was hanging on by a thread. We'd been on the road since early morning, and the last few miles felt endless. Then, just as we were congratulating ourselves on arriving, I managed to lock the car keys inside the boot while trying to wrestle out the suitcases. Ten minutes of mild panic and a helpful neighbour later, we were in.

The house itself made the whole journey worth it. From the outside it looked sturdy and welcoming, the kind of solid Swedish build that seems made for long summers and quiet winters. Stepping inside, the first thing that hit me was the smell of clean wood and a faint trace of sea air drifting through the open windows. The living room felt instantly homely, with big windows letting in the evening light and a sofa that practically begged you to flop down on it. I found myself standing there for a moment, just taking it in, wondering why it had taken us so long to come here.

Outside, the garden stretched out towards the fields, and beyond that you could just catch a glimpse of the sea. It felt private without being cut off, the sort of spot where you could sit with a coffee and watch the day go by without anyone bothering you. We wandered around the grounds for a bit, discovering a little patio tucked behind some shrubs where the barbecue was already set up and waiting. The air was fresh and cool, and for the first time in days I felt properly relaxed.

That first evening we kept things simple. We unpacked just enough to find the kettle, made tea, and sat outside watching the light fade. The mishap with the keys already felt like a distant memory, the sort of small disaster that makes for a better story than it feels at the time. I caught myself thinking about how easy it is to get caught up in the rush of getting somewhere, only to forget to enjoy actually being there once you arrive.

By the time we headed inside for the night, the house had already started to feel like ours. The bedrooms were cosy and practical, the kind of spaces that make you want to stay longer than planned. Lying in bed, listening to the quiet outside, I realised the journey had been worth every wrong turn and every extra mile. Sometimes the best part of a holiday is simply getting through the door and realising you've landed somewhere that already feels right.
