We set off for Slite in early October, the ferry from the mainland running a bit late and the wind already nipping at the car windows. By the time we rolled into the quiet lanes around the holiday home the light had that soft, low slant you only really notice in autumn, and I managed to miss the final turning twice because the map on my phone kept insisting we were still at sea. We eventually pulled up to the little white house tucked behind a low hedge, and the first thing that struck me was how still everything felt. The garden had turned all rusty and gold, and a single birch tree by the gate looked as though someone had shaken gold coins across it. Inside, the wood burner was already laid with kindling, which felt like a small mercy after the long drive.

The owner had left a note saying the heating might take a while to warm the place, so we threw our bags down and went straight for a short walk along the nearby lane. The fields were empty but the air smelled faintly of damp leaves and wood smoke, and the sea, when we reached the little stretch of coast, was that deep grey-blue that only appears once the summer crowds have gone. We stood there watching a couple of fishing boats bob far out, the only sound the soft crunch of our boots on the gravel path. Back at the house the rooms had started to smell of pine and warm air, and we spent the rest of the afternoon unpacking while rain tapped at the windows in short, polite bursts.

That first evening the light faded early, which suited us fine because neither of us felt like going anywhere. We lit the fire, made tea, and sat watching the flames instead of the telly. I found myself thinking how easy it is, in the middle of ordinary life, to forget what a proper pause feels like, and how the colder months seem to hand you one whether you ask for it or not. The house creaked gently as it settled, and outside the birch tree moved in the wind like it was waving us in. By the time we went to bed the whole place felt lived-in already, and I realised the mishap with the directions had actually given us a slower start than we had planned. Sometimes the best bits of a trip arrive when the map decides to ignore you.
