We had barely stepped off the ferry at Visby when the first bit of chaos struck. My partner had carefully packed the walking boots in the car boot, but somehow the keys had slipped between the seats, so there we were, laughing like fools while the ferry queue honked behind us. By the time we reached Sjaelsoe, the little red cottage with its white trim looked even more inviting than the photos suggested. The garden sloped gently down towards the sea and the air smelled of pine and salt.

We had planned a proper coastal hike straight away, yet the Swedish summer had other ideas. A sudden warm breeze turned into a proper heatwave by midday, so we ditched the longer trail and stuck to the easy path that hugs the shoreline just beyond the property. The water glittered so brightly it almost hurt to look at, and we stopped every few minutes to dip our feet in the shallows.

The next morning the sky stayed clear and the temperature climbed again, so we swapped our original route for a shorter loop that still gave us the sea views we wanted. We carried a simple picnic of bread, cheese and local berries, and found a flat rock where we could sit and watch the occasional sailboat drift past. It felt good to move at our own pace rather than chase some ambitious goal.

By the third day the heat had settled into a steady, friendly warmth that made even the shortest walk feel like a treat. We wandered along the low cliffs, spotting tiny wildflowers tucked between the stones and listening to the gentle lap of the waves. At one point we both admitted we had overpacked for the trip, but the extra layers stayed in the cottage while we enjoyed the sun on our arms.

Each evening we returned to Sjaelsoe with sandy shoes and tired legs, grateful that the cottage was so close to the path. The small kitchen meant we could cook simple meals without fuss, and the wooden deck became our favourite spot for watching the light fade over the water. The funny key mishap at the ferry had turned into a running joke, yet it also reminded us that travel rarely goes exactly to plan.

Looking back, those first few days taught me that sometimes the best adventures are the ones you adjust on the spot. The coast kept calling, the weather kept surprising us, and we kept walking, one relaxed step after another.
