We had been on the road for what felt like forever by the time the ferry from the mainland finally docked at Visby. The drive across Gotland to Sanda was meant to be straightforward, but my satnav decided to send us down a gravel track that narrowed into nothing more than a sheep path. After a few minutes of reversing into a ditch and a lot of good-natured bickering, we finally found the proper turning and pulled up outside the little red house in Tofta.

The moment we stepped out of the car the air felt different, softer somehow, carrying that faint smell of pine and sea that you only get this far north. The house itself sat quietly among the trees, its wooden deck already catching the low evening sun. We unlocked the door and were met with the sort of tidy, welcoming space that makes you drop your bags and just stand still for a second. Pale wooden floors, a couple of well-worn sofas, and a kitchen that looked ready for proper holiday cooking rather than rushed meals.

Outside, the garden sloped gently toward a sandy path that disappeared between the pines. We followed it on a whim and within minutes found ourselves on a quiet stretch of beach, the Baltic stretching out calm and silver under the late light. A few families were still out with dogs, but it felt wonderfully unhurried. We walked a short way, shoes in hand, and I caught myself smiling at how quickly the journey stress had slipped away.

Back at the house we unpacked the basics, made tea, and sat on the deck as the sky turned that soft Swedish pink. It struck me then how easy it is to forget what a proper reset feels like until you are somewhere this simple and this still. The mishap on the gravel track already felt like part of the story rather than a frustration, the sort of small chaos that makes the calm afterwards feel even better. I had a feeling the rest of the week was going to unfold in much the same gentle way.
