We set off for our week in the little red cottage near Stanga on a bright September morning, the ferry from Nynashamn giving us just enough time to grab coffee before the sea turned a touch choppy. By the time we reached the island the sky had cleared, and the fields along the narrow road to Naer were already showing that soft gold edge that only early autumn brings. We were feeling rather pleased with ourselves until the satnav decided the shortest route meant squeezing down a tractor track that was really more of a suggestion than a road. The car scraped gently against a low branch and we both yelped, convinced we had just ruined the paintwork, only to discover it was nothing more than a pine needle wedged in the wiper. We laughed all the way to the gate, the mishap already turning into the sort of story we would tell later.

The cottage itself sat in a quiet clearing surrounded by low stone walls and a few apple trees still heavy with fruit. September light filtered through the leaves in long, slanting beams that made the grass look almost yellow. Inside, the wooden floors felt cool under bare feet, and the faint scent of last winter's woodsmoke still lingered in the corners. We opened every window straight away, letting the fresh, slightly crisp air push out the stillness. Outside, the neighbour's sheep grazed contentedly, their bells giving a gentle clink whenever they moved. It felt as though the whole place was settling into its quieter season, the summer crowds long gone and the pace slowing to match.

That first afternoon we wandered no farther than the lane and the small pond at the end of it. Dragonflies hovered low over the water, their wings catching the last warmth of the day, while the reeds had already begun to turn rust-coloured at the tips. We picked a few windfall apples and ate them leaning against the fence, the tartness a perfect match for the cooling air. Back at the cottage the wood burner was already laid, ready for the evening, and we lit it more for the crackle than for heat. The glow it cast across the room made everything feel cosier, as though the house itself approved of our early decision to stay in.

Later we sat on the small wooden bench outside, wrapped in jumpers, watching the light fade behind the trees. The sky turned a deep, clear blue that only September seems to manage, and the first stars appeared while we were still finishing our tea. I found myself thinking how often we rush straight into summer holidays, forgetting that this softer, slower time of year can feel just as special. The little mishap on the track already seemed like part of the charm, a reminder that travel rarely goes exactly to plan but often works out better for it. As the night drew in and the cottage settled around us, I realised we had arrived exactly when Gotland wanted us to, not when we had expected.
