About Gotland
I'd been looking forward to a quiet week at the Martebo cottage in Gotland, but the journey from Visby started with a small comedy of errors. My sat nav decided the narrow gravel track was actually a main road, so I ended up reversing into a ditch while trying to let a tractor pass. The farmer, a cheerful chap called Lars with a beard like a winter hedge, hopped down and pulled me out with a rope and a grin. "First time here?" he asked, and when I admitted it, he offered to lead the way himself.

By the time we reached the red wooden house with its white shutters, Lars had already told me about the best bakery in Martebo village and warned me that the local cats were bolder than the foxes. He introduced me to his wife, Ingrid, who appeared at the gate with a basket of fresh strawberries and a knowing look. "You'll be needing milk for those," she said, and before I could protest she'd sent their grandson, a quiet boy called Emil, off on his bike to fetch some from the farm next door.

The cottage itself felt instantly welcoming, with its simple kitchen and the faint smell of pine from the wooden floors. I was still unpacking when Emil returned, milk in hand and a shy smile on his face. He asked if I liked fishing, and when I said I'd never tried, he promised to show me the little stream behind the property the next morning. Ingrid lingered on the doorstep, chatting about the Midsummer celebrations and how the whole village turned out for the dancing. Lars kept interrupting with jokes about his own two left feet, and soon we were all laughing on the porch.

Later that afternoon, as I sat with a cup of coffee, another neighbour wandered over. Her name was Marta, and she ran the tiny shop at the crossroads. She wanted to know if the cottage still had the old wood stove working, and when I said it did, she offered to bring round some birch logs she'd split herself. "Nothing beats that smell on a cool evening," she told me, and I found myself nodding along as if I'd lived there for years.

What struck me most was how quickly these small exchanges turned strangers into something like friends. I'd arrived expecting solitude, but instead found myself drawn into conversations about everything from the best way to pickle herring to the stubbornness of Gotland sheep. It made me realise how easy it is to forget the simple pleasure of chatting with people who actually live in a place, rather than just passing through it. By the time the sun dipped behind the trees, I was already looking forward to Emil's fishing lesson and whatever story Lars would have ready the next time our paths crossed.
