We set off from Visby on a bright October afternoon with the kind of optimism that only a long weekend in Gotland can bring. The drive to Laerbro took us through quiet lanes lined with golden birch, and the air already carried that sharp autumn bite. My satnav decided to send me down a farm track that ended in a muddy puddle the size of a small pond. I reversed into a ditch trying to turn round, which earned me a polite wave from a passing tractor driver who clearly knew better. By the time we reached the Hide, the sun was low and the fields around us were glowing.

The cottage sat low against the landscape, its timber walls blending into the surrounding meadow. A thin layer of frost still clung to the grass in the shaded spots, even though it was only mid-afternoon. We stepped inside to the smell of woodsmoke from the previous guests and the faint sweetness of dried apples someone had left on the kitchen counter. The owners had left a note suggesting we light the stove straight away, which we did with the enthusiasm of people who had forgotten how quickly the evenings close in up here.

Outside, the garden sloped gently toward a small pond where a pair of ducks drifted without much urgency. The trees had already turned, and every gust sent a fresh scatter of leaves across the gravel path. We wrapped ourselves in blankets and sat on the wooden bench by the door, watching the light fade earlier than it ever does at home. The silence felt deliberate, broken only by the occasional creak of cooling timber and the distant bark of a farm dog.

Later we walked the short loop through the nearby fields, following a track that locals clearly use for evening strolls with their dogs. The air smelled of turned earth and woodsmoke from scattered chimneys. We passed a couple of red wooden houses with lights already on, their windows glowing against the deepening blue. It struck me how much the season dictated the pace here; everything felt slower, more inward, as though the island itself was preparing for the long months ahead.

Back at the Hide we cooked a simple supper and ate by the window, the darkness outside turning the glass into a mirror. I found myself thinking about how rarely I stop to notice the shift between seasons when I'm at home, rushing from one deadline to the next. Here the change felt unavoidable and oddly comforting, like being gently reminded that some things happen whether you're ready or not. The stove crackled steadily, and for the first time in weeks I felt no urge to check my phone or plan the next day. The autumn light had done its quiet work, and so had the cottage.
