I had barely stepped off the ferry in Visby when the first mishap struck, a rogue gust of October wind whipping my ferry ticket clean out of my hand and sending it skittering across the terminal like an autumn leaf. The cottage sat a short walk from the harbour, its red wooden walls glowing against the grey afternoon. I fumbled with the key code for a ridiculous length of time before the door finally clicked open, revealing a snug living room warmed by a wood burner already laid and ready. Outside, the garden still held a few late roses, their petals edged with frost, and the air carried the faint tang of salt and damp leaves.

I met an elderly couple walking their spaniel and we exchanged the sort of brief, friendly nods that feel natural when everyone is bundled against the same weather.

By the time I returned, the cottage felt even cosier, its wooden floors creaking softly under my damp boots. I lit the burner again and sat with a book, occasionally glancing out at the rain streaking the glass. There is something gently humbling about arriving somewhere just as the season turns, about letting the shorter days and cooler air dictate a slower pace instead of rushing to fill every hour.
