We set off from Visby on a bright June morning, the car loaded with picnic bits and the sort of optimism that only comes after a decent breakfast. The drive to Kappelshamn took us along quiet lanes bordered by meadows and the occasional red wooden farmhouse, and I was feeling rather pleased with myself for having printed the directions in advance. That smugness lasted until we reached the final turning and I confidently followed what turned out to be a tractor track instead of the proper road. Five minutes of gentle bouncing later we arrived at the cottage with grass seeds in the radiator grille and my pride slightly dented, but the sea was already visible through the trees and that helped soften the blow.

The house itself sat just back from a low cliff, its pale wooden walls catching the afternoon light. We unpacked the bags onto a small deck that looked straight out towards the water, then decided the best way to shake off the journey was a short walk along the shoreline path. The sun was properly warm by then, so we swapped boots for trainers and set off with water bottles clinking in a rucksack. The trail hugged the edge of the meadows before dropping to a stretch of pebbly beach where the Baltic lapped in gentle ripples. We wandered for an hour or so, stopping to watch a pair of swans glide past and to pick up a few smooth stones that somehow felt worth keeping.

By the time we turned back the weather had shifted. A bank of cloud rolled in from the north, bringing a cooler breeze that made the earlier plan of a longer coastal hike seem less appealing. We adjusted without much fuss, cutting the route short and heading instead for the small inlet just south of the cottage where the water was calmer. There we found a patch of grass to sit on, ate our sandwiches while gulls wheeled overhead, and watched the light change across the waves. It felt oddly satisfying to let the day unfold this way rather than sticking rigidly to a map.

Later that evening, after the clouds had cleared again, we took another stroll along the same path, this time with the low sun casting long shadows across the grass. The mishap on arrival already seemed like a distant memory, though I caught myself smiling whenever I thought about the tractor track. In the end the weather had done us a favour, forcing us to slow down and notice the smaller details: the way the sea smelled different after the breeze, the quiet creak of the wooden jetty nearby, the simple pleasure of walking without a fixed destination. By the time we wandered back to the cottage for supper, the first day had already set a gentle rhythm that felt exactly right for the rest of the stay.
